Dear friends,
Most weeks I have a few general thoughts or observations on music, etc. But, this week, I’ve been pretty busy with work, so I haven’t had the time to synthesize them. Rather than ramble here, I figured I’d just keep things short and sweet. This week, I’ll let the programming speak for itself more. These past few weeks, I’ve had more time to tune into various shows and I always enjoy the banter, the passion, and the thoughtful curation our DJ’s bring to their programs. I feel lucky to have this bit of respite from the day to day. Hope this space has brought you all joy as well. Glad to have you all here.
Yours,
Adam (and Kevin and Hugh)
P.S. Are you interested in producing a broadcast on Real Deep Radio? If you have an idea for one-off or recurring programming that you’d like to pitch, contact us at realdeepradio@gmail.com. Let us know your concept or give us an idea of a typical broadcast. While much of our programming is based around music, we’re open to any and all aural experiences. All we ask is that it’s real deep, none of that fake deep.
SCHEDULE
all times EST, tune in at https://mixlr.com/real_deep_radio/
Sunday, 3/14
8:30-9:30PM – Toxic Dogs with Ivana Ng
An ode to Ivana's radio show in her college days, Toxic Dogs is an exploration of avant-garde jazz from around the world, with the occasional soul, funk and R&B. This is music for deep listening, introspection, and joyous movement.
Monday, 3/15
7:00-8:00PM – Only Bad Music with DJ Trash Bag
DJ Trash Bag comes bombarding you with Only Awful Arias and Truly Terrible Tunes. Expect pop to make you feel as shiny as the sun beaming down on sidewalks of bar garbage in July; techno as crisp as the first step in a bone-chilling winter's yellow snow; jazz as winding as a spring breeze mixing blooming flowers with the putrid stench of sewage treatment I present from my humble city home. As a great Sea Captain once said: Come for the freak, stay for the food.
Thursday, 3/18
8-9PM – Rat Conspiracy with Adam Brill
This week we’re getting LOUD and MAD!!!! I’m playing a tight hour of classic hardcore punk, emo, riot girrl and more!
Saturday, 3/20
8-10AM – Hypnopompia Morning Show with Michael Cormier
Music to soundtrack the fragile moments right before reaching for your phone and realizing the world has gone on without you while you slept.
RECOMMENDED
KEVIN: Tuesday was the first warm day in a long time, so I walked to the park shuffling tracks from the London is the Place for Me series, which collects calypso, jazz, highlife, and more recorded in London in the fifties. The music collected here is some of the best I’ve heard, and these styles and scenes don’t get nearly as many ears turned to them as they deserve. All eight volumes (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) are available on Bandcamp, and you can also read this nice article as an introduction to the set. And heck, since there’s so much to wade through, I’ll link you to a few favorite tracks from the first two volumes right now: here’s Lord Kitchner’s “My Landlady” and “Kitch’s Bebop Calypso”, Young Tiger with another perspective on bebop in “Calypso Be,” and King Timothy on “Gerrard Street.”
ADAM: This week, I’ve been listening to a few compilations. After tuning into Turn it up Mimi! I was inspired to check out The Roots of Chicha. It’s quite groovy and worth your time! I also checked out the punk compilation International Peace Benefit Compilation which runs the gambit of all sorts of punk from around the world. Coming out of Dave Dictor’s R for Radical Records, it’s a cool benefit set that has something for everyone punk inclined. Finally, I’ve been checking out the new compilation Heisei No Oto: Japanese Left-field Pop From the CD Age, 1989-1996. It’s still pretty brand new, so I’ve only given it one listen, but I already highly recommend.
